I’ve been blogging for local and national audiences since 2006, when I supported my sister’s small marketing practice and began to reach out to local companies who weren’t interacting online. By 2007, we decided to go into business together, and opened a national full-service marketing agency to help people create consistent branding between their websites, brochures, direct mail and logos.
Largely, when search engine optimization came on the scene, most business owners were NOT convinced they needed to act. It was a tough sell. We had to PROVE our efforts could cause their site to continue to improve in search results.
So we did. We ran monthly analytics and diagnostics on the blogs, emails, and social media content we provided. Hands down, the companies that blogged made more money and more consistent money than those who didn’t – EVEN in the slowest months of the year for most companies, August and January. But something didn’t make sense.
Even without huge increases in website visitors, they were pulling in higher dollar work from loyal customers who were building their brand. Some were making plans to move to nicer buildings and some were adding divisions to their companies. They were hiring.
We had to ask, “Why?” Going through testimonials and referrals and emails they had sent us, we realized that all that content and all that effort to get it out to their audiences drastically improved their brand familiarity, brand recognition, and actually heightened their community’s favorable opinion of them. VERY similar to how a promotional product improves public perception of the brand it displays. Friends, that’s about 60%.
